Follow these steps to install Phob your Platform Padbox GS :

What's new in this version

If you installed Phob on your Padbox GS before, here is what changed. Update with the steps below (Flash Nuke, install, then calibrate the stick).

  • Works on GameCube and GameCube adapters: fixed the issue where the Padbox wasn't recognized by the console or adapter (Wii U / Mayflash adapters, Slippi).
  • Orange LEDs: the Padbox lights up orange when this version is running, so you can tell at a glance you have the latest one.
  • Stick calibration fixed: the stick now calibrates properly every time. On earlier versions it could stay off-center or stop moving after calibrating.
  • Skipping in-between notches: pressing Start during calibration now skips only that in-between notch. Before, it threw away the whole calibration.
  • No more axis flip: the stick just calibrates, like the original Phob. Each direction ends up where you pushed it during calibration.
  • Tune it on the fly in SmashScope: the Phob button commands (snapback, smoothing, waveshaping, analog scaler, cardinal snapping...) show their value on the C-stick again, so you can adjust them at a tournament without a computer.
  • Wider snapback filter range: from -14 to 12 (-10 to 10 on other Phob controllers). The negative side is the smoothing, OEM-like filter; the positive side is the predictive filter.

1. Enter Bootloader Mode

Hold START + SELECT while plugging your Padbox into your PC.

A drive named RPI-RP2 should appear on your computer.

2. Flash Nuke

Copy the file Flash nuke.uf2 into the RPI-RP2 drive.
Wait a few seconds — the window will close and then reappear automatically.

3. Install Firmware

Now copy the attached file PadBox-GS-Platform-PhobGCC.uf2 into the same RPI-RP2 window.
After a few seconds, the window will close: the firmware is installed.

Note: Phob is a GameCube firmware. Once installed, your Padbox will not show up as a gamepad on your PC or any other USB device — this is normal. Plug it into a GameCube (or a GameCube adapter) to use it. When the latest version is running, the Padbox LEDs light up orange.

4. Calibrate the Stick (required)

The Flash Nuke erases the stick calibration, so the stick will be off-center until you calibrate it. Do this once after every firmware install.

To calibrate the analog stick, follow one of these videos:

Before watching the video keep in mind these button combinations:

  • To unlock calibration (exit Safe Mode), press and hold the following button combination. Safe Mode only locks the settings shortcuts: the controller keeps working in game while it is on.
PadBox GS Platform Phob unlock (exit Safe Mode): hold 1K + 1P + 2P + Start
  • Once unlocked, press and hold the following combination to begin stick calibration:
PadBox GS Platform Phob stick calibration: hold 1K + 1P + 2P + 4K

Tips:

  • For the in-between notches (between two directions), if your gate has no notch there, press Start to skip it, or leave the stick in the middle and press A.
  • Like every Phob controller, the stick only starts responding once you press B after plugging in. If the stick doesn't move, press B once.
  • All the usual Phob button commands work on the controller once it is unlocked (for example snapback: A + X + D-pad up/down). The new value shows on the C-stick for a moment, so you can read it in SmashScope. On the Padbox GS the snapback filter goes from -14 to 12 (-10 to 10 on other Phob controllers).
